As someone who spends her days wandering through the hushed corridors of philosophy—pondering questions about the soul, the will, and the nature of consciousness—I find myself constantly circling back to this one irreducible mystery: love. We treat it as a poetic abstraction, something that defies the cold precision of a laboratory. The basal ganglia—those deep-seated relays that govern habit and reward—are scanning the scene, comparing what they see to the patterns associated with safety, novelty, and pleasure. This is not yet "love." It is recognition. Your brain is asking a very practical question: Does this person fit the shape of my desires?
If the answer leans toward yes—and it often does, because we are remarkably good at finding beauty in the unfamiliar—a chemical switch is flipped. The brain, in its quiet wisdom, has essentially chosen them for you.
What makes this so disorienting is the speed of it. Philosophers have long debated whether free will survives contact with our biology; lovers know intuitively that it does not survive contact with love. By the time your conscious mind begins to evaluate—Do I like their laugh? Are we compatible?—the initial cascade has already set in motion a web of associations, memories, and emotional residues that are far harder to undo than any single decision you could make. You have, in effect, fallen before you knew you were falling.
There is something deeply romantic about this, too, if one can step back from the disorientation long enough to see it. We tend to imagine ourselves as autonomous agents, authors of our own narratives. Our bodies know things our minds have not yet caught up to understanding. To be "falling" is to be temporarily unmoored from our usual sense of control—and for many of us, that is exactly what makes it feel so vivid, so terrifying, and so strangely beautiful. We are not poets in this moment; we are chemists in a laboratory we did not build. And yet the result—the particular warmth of being seen, chosen, held by another consciousness—remains as personal and as unrepeatable as any act of free will could ever be.
So the next time you find yourself falling—really falling, that sudden dizzy plunge into someone else's orbit—try not to fight it. You are not losing your mind; you are simply meeting an ancient part of yourself, one that speaks in neurotransmitters and has been waiting a very long time for the right person to flip its switch.
And when the storm settles, as it always does, what remains is something far more precious than chemistry: the decision to stay. That, at least, is where philosophy gets to help us—where we choose, with full knowledge of our own fragility, to build a home out of the ruins of our first beautiful fall.
